Preparing for Your Spouse: Hygiene, Adornment and Kindness in Islam

Educational summary based on Islamic Guide to Sexual Relations by Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari, compiled as Guidelines to Intimacy in Islam. For personal rulings, ask a qualified scholar.

Preparation is part of a healthy marriage. Islam asks both partners to put effort into how they present themselves to each other.

For husbands: the practices of fitra

The Prophet ﷺ listed matters of natural disposition, including trimming the moustache, using the miswak, rinsing the mouth and nose, cutting nails, removing underarm and pubic hair, and cleaning the private parts with water. Practical points from the guide:

  • Keep the mouth fresh. The Prophet ﷺ used the miswak first when entering his home.
  • Bathe regularly and use halal perfume. Musk is described as the best of scents.
  • Wear clean, neat clothes. Allah is beautiful and loves beauty.
  • Do not leave grooming tasks for more than forty days.
  • Avoid pure black dye. Henna is recommended.

Ibn Abbas said, "I love to adorn myself for my wife just as I love her to adorn herself for me."

For wives: adornment for the husband

A wife is rewarded for beautifying herself for her husband. Scholars permit clean grooming, make-up, jewelry, henna, tidy hair and perfume within the home, and attractive clothing at home. The Prophet ﷺ even encouraged women to use henna. Fresh breath and good hygiene matter just as much, and many couples find this the simplest way to feel closer.

Where the limits are

  • Perfume is for the home. A woman should not go out wearing it.
  • Avoid tattoos, cosmetic surgery for beautification, human-hair wigs and extensions, and over-shaped eyebrows.
  • Adornment is for your spouse, not for attracting others.

Kindness is the real preparation

The Prophet ﷺ asked how a man could mistreat his wife during the day and then expect closeness at night. Tenderness, words of affection and good character outside the bedroom shape what happens inside it.
