Trust is the foundation of tranquility in marriage. Allah says that He created spouses so that you may find peace in them and placed love and mercy between you (Qur'an 30:21).
Garments for each other
"They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them" (Qur'an 2:187). A garment covers, protects and adorns. Spouses who expose each other's private matters tear that garment.
The warning
The Prophet ﷺ said that among the worst people in Allah's sight on the Day of Judgment is a man who is intimate with his wife and she with him, and then he spreads her secret (Sahih Muslim 1437). Scholars including al-Nawawi stated the warning covers women too. In another report, the Prophet ﷺ compared such sharing to a shaytan and shaytanah meeting in the road while people look on.
Why it matters
- It puts thoughts in the minds of others and invites sin.
- It humiliates and harms your spouse.
- It destroys the trust that gives marriage its calm.
- Boasting about performance in bed is a shameless habit that Islam rejects.
When you may speak
If there is a real need, such as asking a scholar, seeking marriage counselling, or complaining of injustice to the people who can help, the prohibition is lifted. Even then, share only what is necessary and avoid graphic detail.
Also protect privacy in practice
Privacy also means keeping intimate moments away from other people's sight and hearing, including children who understand. Parents are encouraged to teach children to seek permission before entering their room at the times the Qur'an mentions (Qur'an 24:58).
