The First Night of Marriage: Islamic Etiquette and Gentle Guidance

Educational summary based on Islamic Guide to Sexual Relations by Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari, compiled as Guidelines to Intimacy in Islam. For personal rulings, ask a qualified scholar.

The first night sets the tone for a marriage. Both spouses are likely to feel nervous, shy and hopeful. Islam's guidance is built to make it easier.

1. Greet and make dua

Begin with salam. The husband places his hand on his wife's forehead and asks Allah for her good and the good He placed in her, and seeks refuge from any evil in her (Abu Dawud). A wife can make the same dua for her husband. It does not mean anyone is evil. It is a request for protection and goodness.

2. Pray two rakat together

Companions such as Ibn Mas'ud advised the couple to pray two rakat and ask Allah to bless them for each other and to unite them with good. It calms the heart and starts the marriage with Allah.

3. Talk gently

Share light, kind conversation. Talk about your hopes, your faith and how you want your home to be. The husband should create ease. The wife should respond with warmth rather than playing hard to get.

4. There is no rush

Intimacy on the first night is not required. The guide says a husband should be patient, even if it takes days. A virgin may feel anxiety or pain, so gentleness is essential. Difficulty on the first night is not a sign of weakness. It is natural and passes.

5. Never assume the worst

If a husband has doubts about his wife's past, he must not harbour suspicion. Qur'an 49:12 tells us to avoid much suspicion. Virginity can be affected by many things, and Hanafi scholars protect a woman's honour in such matters.

A calm start

Treat each other as a trust from Allah. Gentle words, patience and gratitude will do more than anything else for the years ahead.
