Every parent wants children who pray without being asked. The path there is slower and gentler than most of us expect.
Start with atmosphere, not instruction
A child who sees prayer treated as the most important appointment of the household learns something before a single command is given.
Age-appropriate steps
- Under 7: presence and imitation. Let them stand beside you.
- 7 onward: teaching and encouragement, gently and consistently.
- Teen years: conversation about meaning, not only compliance.
Mistakes that create resistance
Using prayer as a punishment. Shaming in front of siblings. Enforcing on the child what the parent skips. Children read the gap between instruction and behaviour immediately.
