Raising children who love the salah

Encouragement outlasts enforcement. What the Sunnah says about teaching prayer by age, and the mistakes that create resistance.

Every parent wants children who pray without being asked. The path there is slower and gentler than most of us expect.

Start with atmosphere, not instruction

A child who sees prayer treated as the most important appointment of the household learns something before a single command is given.

Age-appropriate steps

  • Under 7: presence and imitation. Let them stand beside you.
  • 7 onward: teaching and encouragement, gently and consistently.
  • Teen years: conversation about meaning, not only compliance.

Mistakes that create resistance

Using prayer as a punishment. Shaming in front of siblings. Enforcing on the child what the parent skips. Children read the gap between instruction and behaviour immediately.

A note on sources. Everything above is drawn from the Qur'an, authentic Sunnah, and recognised Sunni scholarship. Where scholars differ, we say so. If you spot an error in a citation, please tell us and we will correct it.
